In a community where residents are invited to join forces with staff on the design and renovation of their building, interior design projects become more than just a refresh – they kindle the flame of creativity, foster unity, and enrich the tapestry of a resident’s existence with collaboration and community spirit.

Shalom Park in Aurora, Colorado, is one such community. After over a decade of using the same furnishings, fabrics, and colors, it was time to inject a modern touch into a dated interior.

“The Eden Alternative is a care philosophy that transforms long-term care into a more person-centered, holistic approach, focusing on combating loneliness, helplessness, and boredom by fostering an environment of meaningful relationships, empowerment, and continuous growth for both residents and staff.”1

Creative Dialogues: Bridging Voices

Every unique project requires versatile communication. The Aptura project management team utilized digital and traditional methods to discuss complex aesthetics and design in real-time. This hands-on approach opened the floor for staff and residents to voice their opinions and guide design selections. The result? Nothing short of a beautiful, comfortable building that reflects the heart of the community and its occupants.

“The virtual way Aptura handled the project worked out well. Everything went smoothly, and we kept in touch through emails, Zoom meetings, calls and even some on-site visits. They sent over samples and understood the style we were aiming for. Aptura was always quick to respond to any messages we sent.”

Aptura’s interior design team masterfully blended design elements such as flooring, lighting, fabric, and furnishings through a common color palette, tastefully presenting a unified vision of the future design to the community, listening to their feedback and making the necessary adjustments based on the resident’s feedback. This approach not only brought the creative vision to life but also ensured that the personal touches of each resident and staff member resonated throughout every room and hallway, making the environment feel truly like home.

“I sent Shalom Park different color options for carpets and vinyl planks. Each floor was able to choose from these samples to customize their own floor. One of the floors had a strong Russian-based community. Because of this, we tried to incorporate as much artwork around culture on their floor and even found some painted china from Russian artists as well.

I worked with an Eden alternative spokesperson – someone who works at the community who served as a bridge between the community and their vision and the Aptura design team throughout the process.”

Design Decisions: a Closer Look

An elegant feeling of simplicity and the serene hues of nature intertwine to bring the tranquil essence of Colorado’s outdoors inside, creating a community space that radiates a warm, homely comfort without being overbearing or too flashy. Small, built-in desks replaced large nurse stations, opening up the space for a homelike feel and integrating staff more fully into the community itself.

Instead of opting for the streamlined modern look typical of this century’s casegoods, Aptura’s design team selected specialty pieces, ones that have a story to tell; a history that went beyond Shalom Park and the community.

The greens and blues of Shalom Park’s chosen color palette incorporate culture and history.he diverse selection for each floor enabled residents to proudly show off their roots. One floor harkened back to its community’s strong Russian roots. Photographs of popular Russian landscapes and delicately painted china integrate tastefully with the natural materials, natural leathers and faux-leather vinyls that flow through the community as a whole.

“Renovating with the Aptura team was a smooth process. Kyle David played a vital role and remotely managed the project seamlessly, while Robert and Brigid understood the aesthetic we were aiming for, and Brigid was proactive in sending us samples. Residents and staff participated in the selection of fabric, furnishings and colors. Throughout the process, Aptura demonstrated both respect and support for our approach and made the difference throughout this process.”
