Hunters Woods at Trails Edge, a state-of-the-art senior community in Reston, VA, elevated its resident safety system to a new level. The community, which sits on 300,000 square feet and features four levels of care, was in need of safety improvements, according to Rick Irwin, CEO of IntegraCare Corp., which owns Hunters Woods. Although the site expands over four acres, the total footprint and parking occupy only 1.6 acres, leaving 62% of the site open to protect the nature trail and wetlands. A 53-foot view shed near the middle of the building was required to allow the townhouses on the south side of the property visual access to the nature park. The client also requested a connection to the Turquoise Nature Trail, Reston Town Center and Reston Community Center through an under roadway tunnel.
Technology Solutions for Safety
With assistance from Direct Supply Aptura and our Technology Solutions team, many innovative security features were developed for this community. Among them: hardwired access control with keyless entry on all 210 resident room doors, which limits a resident to only entering his or her room and removes the risks involved with conventional keyed locks.
Another new safety feature is the power-assist door opener option for resident room doors. The option helps reduce the risk of falls by making it easier for residents with mobility issues to enter their rooms. Instead of scanning a fob, pushing a lever and opening the door, a resident can use a push-button remote to unlock the door and open it.
The integration of various safety systems sets this community apart. Wireless nurse call is integrated with the hardwired access control, fire detection and the advanced wander management system. The fire detection and alarm system also is integrated with the electronic locking hardware.
“With more than 300,000 square feet in this community, monitoring all operational systems can be challenging. We integrated eight different low-voltage systems to help boost safety and staff efficiency.” – Patrick Mahoney, Senior Technology Designer, Direct Supply Aptura
Inspired Design and Interiors
The design of this community focuses on the surrounding nature trail which provides sweeping natural views from five outdoor terraces. Carefully located senior-appropriate exercise stations border the nature trail, which opens to the surrounding community. Throughout the community the unique technology design allowed for innovative, modern equipment to create a forward-thinking, world-class safety solution for all residents. Memory Care was placed on the first floor to facilitate easy access for residents and family. The floor plan creates an environment that facilitates a sense of belonging with undulating open sunlit spaces facing the park. Articulated spaces allow for the enhancement of their unique needs, skills and abilities. A relaxing environment, complete with beautiful landscaping and cozy areas optimize time with family and friends. Secure courtyards allow residents to enjoy fresh air and gardening. Grandview
Colt’s Wood Cafe
- This clubroom is where diners can enjoy a casual meal, hot or cold, and beverage service (specialty coffee, beer, wine) while relaxing in the lounge during a special event or as an alternative to dining in the main dining room. There is space in this dining offering for activities, like games and themed gatherings, that promote resident and family engagement.
Country Kitchen
- This area takes a more residential approach to meal service with a robust back of house pantry that houses the commercial equipment for plating and ware washing flanked by two residential style neighborhood Country Kitchens. This keeps the noise and aesthetic of the commercial equipment out of sight while the Country Kitchen reminds residents of home when they dine or participate in food preparation activities.

Resident Engagement
Residents who enjoy reading love spending time in The Book Nook library. Finishes and fabrics from the foyer below are carried upstairs to this cozy library and gaming space. The blue of the bookshelves and the green of the sofas balances the overall warm color palette.
The Sports Room features multiple seating options and photography of Reston’s own local, and Virginia’s oldest, distillery. It’s a special pace for the male residents to gather, watch the big game and engage together.
The Art Studio caters to the creatives, featuring large windows that provide visual access to the Turquoise Trail below. In this space, the color palette includes shades of white and light grey, placed strategically to give seniors increased depth perception.
The Salon is a high impact feminine space. Over saturated floral artwork compliments the tree top views from the windows. This is where women in the community come to receive pampering and enjoyment. Located right next to the salon, The Barbershop is a space dedicated to male residents. Oversized chairs allow for comfortable conversations while in the barber’s chair. The graphic artwork and wood veneer houndstooth wallcovering sets it apart from the overtly feminine salon.
The Hudgins Theater, named in honor of local community members, is a hearing-enhanced space that uses a loop system to connect to Bluetooth-enabled hearing devices. This area is used for ‘virtual’ travel classes that come with a special dinner to compliment the travel.
The Fitness Center is adjacent to a specialized rehabilitation space and creates a comfortable environment for seniors to establish their fitness routines using HUR fitness equipment and an electronic ID card. The bright kinetex floor tiles provide a nonslip, noise-reducing flooring that helps promote safety and creates the look of a boutique workout facility.
The Result
This community is equipped with technology that fills in the gaps for staff and ensures peace of mind for loved ones that residents are safe and receiving quality care. For this reason, it received the top prize in the Safety category of the Senior Living track in the 2019 McKnight’s Excellence in Technology Awards.
