It’s no surprise the COVID-19 pandemic has greatly shifted the trajectory of senior housing design and construction. While the fundamentals driving change in the industry – including economics, demographics and consumerism – are staying the same, we are seeing a need for improving healthcare and building healthy communities.

In 2021, we predict senior housing design will promote the feeling of home, feature wellness-inspired trends and include a continued focus on cleanability and durability. To further explore these trends, our Senior Living experts created a free ebook – download your copy below.

2021 Design Trends in Senior Living

One theme we’re hearing again and again – and one of our top trends for 2021 – is the need for flexibility in today’s environment. In unpredictable situations, flexible design and programming can help your community adapt to whatever the day has in store.

Even in crises, like the COVID-19 pandemic, residents and their family members want to see programming and amenity choices. Designing multiple multipurpose spaces can help you provide those options.

Senior Living Dining Room

For example, consider your dining program. In normal times, many communities offer an array of amenities, like a chapel, theater and library, to promote resident choice and independence.

During an emergency, however, any room can serve as a dining room, including those same amenities. These adaptable spaces allow resident socialization while being able to easily separate or convert spaces in a crisis.
